Editorial Policy

This page explains how Papua Movement decides what to publish, how we handle sources and claims, and how we correct mistakes. Papua Movement is published by the Youth Foundation for Indonesian Peace (YPPI) and edited by Steve Rick Elson Mara.

Who writes and edits our articles

Our articles are researched and written by contributors from YPPI and the Indonesian Students Association (PPI). The editor reviews articles and may ask for changes or decline to publish them. Articles that are not credited to a named author appear under “Papua Movement Editorial Team”.

Sources and attribution

  • We name the source of every important claim. Claims made by the Indonesian military, police, government officials, armed groups or any other party are attributed to that party, for example “according to the military task force”.
  • When a claim comes from only one side and we cannot verify it independently, we say so in the article.
  • We prefer primary sources: official statements, documents, data from agencies such as BPS (Statistics Indonesia), and direct interviews. When we rely on another media outlet’s reporting, we say so.
  • Figures are published only with their source. If a figure has no reliable source, we leave it out.

News and opinion

  • News articles report events and their sources.
  • Opinion articles present an author’s argument. They are labeled as opinion and filed under the Opinion category. Opinions are the authors’ own and do not necessarily reflect YPPI’s position.

Explainers on sensitive topics

For explainers on the history, politics, independence movements, armed groups and human rights situation in Papua, we apply these additional standards:

  • The first sentence answers the question directly.
  • Every factual claim is linked to a source, such as United Nations documents, academic research, independent media or official statements.
  • The main perspectives, including those of the Indonesian government, Papuan groups and leaders, and independent observers, are presented and attributed to the people who hold them.
  • We use neutral language and do not present any side’s claims as fact unless they are independently established.
  • Disputed figures and events are presented as disputed, with the range of estimates and their sources.

Corrections

If we publish something that is wrong, we correct it as soon as we confirm the error. Corrections to facts are noted at the end of the article with the date of the change. We do not silently change facts. To request a correction, email [email protected] with the article link and the issue.

Use of AI

Our contributors research and write the substance of each article. AI tools are used only for final language polishing, such as grammar and clarity. AI is not used to generate facts, quotes or sources.

Conflicts of interest and disclosure

  • Papua Movement is funded by YPPI through its members’ contributions and receives no funding from the Indonesian government or military.
  • Articles about YPPI’s own activities are written by our team and should be read with that relationship in mind.
  • Our editor is the author of Papua: The Heart of Indonesia–Pacific Food Resilience, which many of our articles cite. We disclose this on our About page.
